I started Wentworth Consultants in 1979. I've been interested in the 'psychology' of success and fulfilment at work since I was a tea-boy on a building site at 15, and all my later studies took me down that route. I always wanted my own business, but I never imagined it would be in Consultancy and Training.
I really love the work we do. It's very fulfilling intellectually and emotionally and I find it even more stimulating than I did when I started. The consultancy work provides continual challenge - especially working with CEOs on organisation-wide change. The training workshops are so rewarding because they can change people's lives in quite dramatic ways, and they really do have an impact on company performance. They also make people happier.
I'm passionate and creative, I have a zany humour and I have strong views on almost everything. I love running, music and the outdoors (especially mountains) - they all feed my spirit.
My personal journey with Wentworth started in 2014. I’ve had a varied career which has ranged from training as a bricklayer when I left school to working as a teacher with disadvantaged inner city kids. In the meantime, I’ve guided people to the top of challenging mountains across the world whilst working for an expedition business.
Being a life long “searcher”, I was led to Wentworth’s door after a chance to reconnect with an old friend. I find the Wentworth courses deeply fulfilling, challenging, but always life affirming and rich. It’s a great privilege to be part of other people’s adventures, growth and learning. And selfishly, I always find I learn, grow and challenge myself a lot on these courses too!
I love pedal bikes of any description and really enjoy getting out on the road or trails for long rides either with friends or on my own.
Coming across Wentworth in 2004 was a new chapter for me – I thought teams and leadership stuff could be learned pretty easily but then I realised it needed to be “felt, experienced, lived and breathed” and it is far more significant to pay attention to what we can learn about ourselves and our inner worlds than it is about any clever model or management theory.
The facilitator/trainer in me was born after a Physical Education & Psychology Degree when I got a job as a Physical Training Instructor (Civilian) for the Police – basically I was paid to throw petrol bombs at Police Officers! During this time I got really interested in what makes leaders and teams tick in challenging circumstances and found myself working with various response teams. After this I volunteered with Raleigh International taking young people to developing countries on adventurous expeditions and found out what real time, experiential learning was all about.
My work life has always been people-related and I am forever curious by how we interact and communicate. I believe our effectiveness is based largely on our relationships – good relationships get things done and speed things up – poor relationships slow things down and get in the way.
At home I live with my wife Ros, who is a head teacher, and my 2 teenage boys, Finn & Roddy, whom I regularly ride mountain bikes with all over our local countryside here in the Peak District. I love to do anything physical and have recently learned to ride a unicycle.
My involvement with Wentworth began in 1999 through the open Wentworth 1 programme and then through “Making the Most of Your Potential” (Wentworth 2). These experiences helped me to realise that my own success is based not only on my own capability but on the ability of those around me. I delight in encouraging, challenging and nurturing others to realise their potential in leadership and in life.
My background is in Engineering and Management within the Chemicals Industry. Although I left engineering behind many years ago I still enjoy working with my hands either constructing and flying model aircraft, painting with watercolours or playing my guitar. I have recently started playing the ukulele.
Over recent years I have lived and worked in both Malaysia and Germany, both wonderful experiences presenting the opportunity to experience new cultures and make good friends.
I am very open and will express my thoughts and feelings freely. I am caring, considerate and sensitive. I keep myself reasonably fit with cycling, swimming and golf. More than anything else I like to have fun each and every day.
I joined Wentworth in 1997 as the Administrator. I love working here because of the variety and the challenge - I'm involved in all aspects of the business. It's never dull, it's a friendly place to be, and I have freedom, support and trust - of course it's not necessarily in that order and not necessarily all of the time!! The Consultants tell me they couldn’t do their job without me.
Outside of work I run a local Gardening Club and am a season ticket holder at Huddersfield Town.
